Just Got Lucky.

...and super blessed! (so sorry for blabbing)
It's thirty minutes past midnight but here I am, blogging. This should have been posted last Wednesday but I was busy with a number of things which I'd rather not elaborate. And I couldn't stand another day of delay for thanking everyone who in one way or another supported, inspired, guided, and prayed with me to achieve... Arggh, too drowsy to get senti now. But I QUALIFIED FOR THE WVSU-COLLEGE OF MEDICINE ADMISSIONS! There. Yeee. I got in! And this time, I'm 101% certain to enroll on June!
I can't wait to call myself a medical student. :)

Holy Week's activities distracted me from being anxious so it only sinked in last Sunday that the results are going to post an epic effect on my career path since I only have one target school. And not getting in would mean losing my chance this coming school year.

I have Chinese blood but we're not really practicing Chinese. I do hear often though that red is a lucky color and polka dots attract luck. So I decided to wear polka dots since Sunday (sadly, no photos). Received alot of polka dotted items from my grandmoms anyway and I felt that this is the perfect time to wear them. But effective or not, there is just so much goody-ing  this week.

I don't have Adobe Photoshop yet, but I discovered that I have this Arcsoft Photostudio 2000 (yes, very retro) and tried it. Whatever happened to my photos is not Arcsoft's fault. I just suck in editing, that's it.

:D
Sixth from bottom! This is the first of three pages, btw.
Congratulations to all who got in!
My fingers remain crossed for my friends who are still on the waiting list. I'm praying for you, guys!

And have I mentioned that I completed my IV Therapy requirements last Thursday?
Thank you Saint Anthony Hospital ER staff!

My blog's turning a month old on Sunday! I have blog resolutions to post tomorrow. :))
How did your week go?

Much love,
Mela

Traditions.

Came from a Catholic family and Holy Week just gets crazier year after year.
Alot took place---from our family recollection, to the Last Supper (usually held at the Mayor's house--my uncle's), to visiting churches around the province, family visits, to the Good Friday procession...
So much going around and first cute meets!
I have new friends and I still find it funny how we've known each other since and became friends just now.

Anyway.
Yesterday was Black Saturday. We decided to go on a lie-low and get cozy at home.
My brother, Ralph, was busy as hell packing suitcases and getting ready for a month's stay in Manila and I, too, was as busy coming up with my to-buy list and pulling off pieces for our last outfit post.
He takes most of my photos and not having him here means less frequent outfit docus.

Ralph has been very supportive and these fun photoshoots sure have developed a special brother-sister bond between us. Mom even said that there are no doubts on Ralph having trouble with maarte and demanding girls because he's had a bunch of practice with me.

We will miss you, Kuya. :(

I decided to be redundant and look black on a Black Saturday. Excuse the eyes, I'm not a makeup enthusiast! HAHA. I needed them to be dark to look a bit bigger. The bandana, the shirt, and the purse are all vintage hand-me-downs from my Lola.

I remember mentioning that my outfits are mostly donated by my grandmoms: Mom's mom (Lola Mely) and Mom's aunt (Tita Pat). Tita Pat's based in the U.S. and unlike Lola Mely (who has a bigger built), she has a body structure (and shoe size!) quite similar to mine. She's one of the most fashionable and glamorous ladies I know. And she doesn't look old, at all. I received loads of goodies (clothes, shoes, bags, magazines) from her last Friday and I swear, they're all gorge. I'm sooo blessed to have very kind grandmoms like them.

St. Jude Thaddeus has been our family's patron saint for more than 20 years and we represent him every Good Friday procession. ©NicoYap

Visited eight churches last Thursday after the Last Supper. We've been doing this for the past years, more popularly known as Visita Iglesia.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church

Parish of St. Nicholas Tolentino

Santa Monica Church houses the biggest bell in Asia. And the third biggest in the world, if I'm not mistaken.

Wide-legged trousers! And of course, my signature look--color blocked. :)
I look like I just woke up, sorry.

Happy Easter, everyone!

Love By The Lake.

It's April, not February. But love was definitely in the air last Monday.
Although romance is just around the corner (or is it not?), I don't mean that kind of love.
What I want to emphasize on is the one that people refer to as the extension of God-- my first neighbors--  my FAMILY.

The Yaps had a Lenten Family Recollection at the Lakehouse (San Antonio Resort) with Fr. Marlon Bordo as spiritual director. Six families from my mother's side, including ours, participated and the experience was one great eye opener for each of us.
After Fr. Marlon delivered his talk, we were given the opportunity to sit together by family and share our realizations and Easter resolutions. But my cousin, Nico, had this shrewd suggestion that we all sit as one big family and listen to each other's stories.
Everything just came smoothly. Even my cousins and uncles whom I have never heard sharing their personal lives talked. There was laughter, tears, joking. It wasn't the typical serious, boring recollection after all. We loved every bit of the encounter--even the food! And our folks made the agreement that we do this every year.

You guys should bring your families together and try this kind of experience too!

Got inspired by Vern Enciso's How to Incorporate Sporty Clothes into Your Outfit so I tried it!
I'm wearing jogging pants here and the color is just love. The bag I'm using is a birthday gift from my twin sister, Boom-Boom (I'll blog about her once we'd find time to catch up and take pictures). And my cardigan--it's one of the oldest I have, really! It's ten years old and I guess this is the first time in ten years that you'll see me wearing this.

The venue. Thank you, San Antonio Resort for accommodating us well!

My brother plus some of my male cousins!

Nico's girlfriend gave him these! Sweet.

My grandmother at the center. For us, she's the greatest philanthropist.
Came home last Sunday with a paper bag full of vintage goodies courtesy of Lola (Grandma). Can't wait to wear them for my outfit posts!

 Siopao!

They have the same name, and both are just 18! Nice meeting you, Raphael (my aunt's nephew)! He's spending the Holy Week with us. I really hope he enjoys his first Capiz visit. :)

This next photo is just craaaazzy...
So don't freak out!!!!

Taken after a heavy dinner. HAHA. Who has the biggest tummy?

Bella Luna. Beautiful Moon.

The seafood floats from my previous post are still on display at the People's Park until this weekend.
Feast your eyes while you can!

Much love,
Mela

Parade of Lights.

Life is a One-Way Street.
You thump on bumpy roads. You get a flat tire. Your tank runs out of fuel. You get tired driving.
Whether you decide on turning off your engine and take a short rest or push yourself until the vehicle overheats, your journey doesn't stop there. Eventually, the need to move forward steers you.
There are no U-turns. No shortcuts.
You can hitchhike with friends. It will be more fun travelling with companions, anyway.
Or you park your car on one corner, decide to stay there forever, and disrupt the rush-hour traffic; while you watch everyone behind you slowly overtaking, arriving at places that you would have wanted to reach first.

I'm 21 and I still don't drive.
But this one-way street thing hit me while we were stuck in traffic for more than two hours last Saturday to  witness the first-ever grand celebration of Capiz's Foundation Anniversary--Capiztahan 2011.
We were on open-window and I thank my lungs for surviving from all the smoke it took in.
I was hungry at half-way of our ten-minute-turned-two-hour trip.
The People's Park became so near, yet so far to me.
Deep inside, I didn't care about how the fireworks or the parade would go anymore. What I wanted was to go home, take my bath, and sleep. But as I looked back and saw the vehicles behind us and how far we've gone, I thought, 'Maybe this is a test of patience'.
Despite the slow progression (at least, we were progressing, and we were riding--others were just walking), we reached the Park on perfect time for the fireworks.

SQUID!! Yes, I said Papered 'Shrimp' on my Peppy Thai post when it's supposed to be PAPERED SQUID. I find it funny how I said, "Papered Shrimp! I could eat plates of these!" because I'd surely suffer anaphylactic shock eating a plateful of shrimp. I'm allergic to shrimp. And I don't get rashes whenever I eat some anymore, I just feel my throat constricting--breathing becomes hard. :(

Shrimp!

Look who we found, Miss Universe 4th Runner-Up, Venus Raj. I love her skin, very Filipina!

I only took part during the second day of the three-day Capiztahan celebration. There are certainly more to improve and I'm looking forward to a better, bigger, grander, and a more colorful Capiztahan next year.
All-in-all, I believe that it was a success. :) My congratulations extend to the city, municipal, and provincial officials, as well as to all the CapizeƱos who supported the event.

As for what I wore:

Forgive me for the lack of good background. Was really busy last Saturday helping my parents out so we could close our shop early. There isn't a nice view outside either (tricycle-filled streets) so I decided to just ditch the background and focus on my outfit post.

Blouse: Poetry Clothing, Skirt: Pink Manila, Accessories: SM Dept Store, Bag: Coach, Sandals: Bazaar

With some of our workers. :)
Last Saturday was our secretary's last day (she'll be working in Iloilo), hence the souvenir photo. I hope this isn't the last! We will miss you, Nene. Keep safe!

 Much love,
Mela
